Ingrid Bergman for JOAN OF ARC (Victor Fleming, 1948). Joan of arc

This 1948 version of Joan of Arc's story is a big disappointment considering the talent involved: director Victor Fleming, who directed both GONE WITH THE WIND and THE WIZARD OF OZ in 1939, and a cast including Ingrid Bergman, José Ferrer, and Ward Bond. JOAN OF ARC (1948) fails to live up to any expectations. The editing is amateurish.

Under the direction of Victor Fleming (whose credits include Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz), this is a stodgily respectable mini-epic, adapted from Maxwell Anderson's acclaimed play Joan of Lorraine and giving then-33-year-old Ingrid Bergman one of her quirkiest star turns as the 19-year-old "Maid of Lorraine," who was divinely inspired and destined by fate to rescue her beloved.

Released in December of 1948, Joan of Arc was Fleming's last film. Since his contract with MGM had expired, Fleming made the movie independently, and it was produced by Walter Wanger. The movie was loosely based on playwright Maxwell Anderson's successful Broadway play Joan of Lorraine, and Anderson himself adapted it for the screen.
